Year 9
The coursework year starts a year early
Every international route we map assesses something the domestic GCSE dropped: a coursework portfolio, an independent investigation, a commentary on the student's own choices, or a comparison written at length out of the exam room. Year 9 is where that becomes teachable without the entry at stake
Autumn 16 weeks
The Portfolio
Three short pieces in three different modes, and one of them redrafted in the open
A piece written to discuss, argue or persuade, 500 to 800 words
A piece written to describe, 500 to 800 words
A piece written to narrate, 500 to 800 words
The unmarked first draft of one piece, kept and submitted with it
Cambridge 0500 asks for exactly this portfolio and requires an unmarked first draft inside it. Students who have never kept a draft treat the requirement as paperwork rather than as evidence of thinking
One essay comparing two whole texts the class chooses together, written out of the exam room
A comparative essay of about 1000 words on two texts
A one page plan showing which points belong to which text, made before writing
A short paragraph on what the comparison could not cover, and why
Comparison is a whole essay shape on the coursework routes and only one section of one paper in the exams. Year 9 is where the shape is learned while the texts are still chosen for interest
Research a question of the student's own from five real sources, then write for a named reader
A written task for a stated purpose and audience, drawing on the research
A source record naming all five sources, how each was found and why it was kept or dropped
One page of the student's own note making, submitted as it was made
OxfordAQA 9270 assesses the source record itself and requires at least five sources with an example of note making. Research method is examinable content on that route, so it is taught, not assumed
A short piece written to a tight brief, followed by a commentary on the choices that made it work
A text of no more than 400 words written to a given form, purpose and audience
A reflective commentary of about 300 words on the language choices made and why
A second version of the same brief for a different audience, with the changes annotated
Four separate international routes ask a student to write something and then analyse what they wrote. It is the single most transferable demand in the international set and has no domestic equivalent at GCSE
Collect real language from the world outside the classroom, and find something true about it
A research question the student wrote themselves
A small collected data set: signage, greetings, playground talk, group chat, shop names
A report of about 800 words with the data quoted and a conclusion the data supports
OxfordAQA 9670 sells a 2500 word investigation on data the candidate collects, and says any topic is acceptable if its focus is language. A student who has never collected data writes an essay with examples instead of an investigation with findings
Each project arrives as a complete package, sequenced across Year 9, with the coursework demand it rehearses named on every one.

Running all year, underneath the projects
Redrafting in the open · Every project, one piece. Three routes require or assess a draft. Drafting is a taught habit, not a tidy-up
A reading record kept all year · Weekly. Coursework routes let students choose texts. A student with no reading record has nothing to choose from
Assessment in two windows, not one · Autumn and summer. Every international board runs two live series a year, so the habit of a second window starts here
These projects are our curriculum, not a board requirement, and nothing here is entered for a qualification. Every demand they rehearse is a component in a signed-off map, and each one links to the specification that proves it.

Every board this market actually sits
All six are mapped from the board's own specification and signed off, with every code read off a live specification rather than from memory. Where a board has two specifications running at once, the card says so and the order names the cohort.

Set texts are named per examination year, not per syllabus version
Mapped from the syllabus for exams in 2028, 2029 and 2030, with all three years of set texts held separately. Tell us the examination year as well as the text: the same code means different books in different years.
Anthology based non-fiction, with an examined or coursework second component
Mapped from Issue 7 of the specification, with both anthology parts captured and the mark by mark objective table published by the board reconciled against them.
Closed book poetry and prose, open book drama and heritage texts
Mapped from Issue 3, with all thirty four set texts held. Two prose texts are new for first assessment in May 2026 and have no past papers behind them.
Code read from the specification cover, not from memory
The only international specification we hold where the board scales the papers: a Paper 1 mark is worth half as much again as a Paper 2 mark.

Two routes of equal weight, one with coursework in place of unseen prose
Both routes come to the same 150 marks, so the choice between them is a teaching decision rather than an easier road. Two cohorts are live: teaching on the revised specification starts September 2026, and four set texts differ. Tell us the cohort.

Open book, but editions may carry no notes, no critical material and no paraphrase
Mapped from Issue 7, with thirty five texts and all one hundred prescribed poems held. The edition rules rule out most school editions, so separate revision material is a requirement of the specification rather than an extra.
Code read from the specification cover, not from memory

Organised by genre: tragedy, place, crime and mystery, representations
Thirty eight texts held across two live cohorts. Teaching on the revised specification starts in 2027 and nine set texts change, so an order names its cohort. Unlimited resits, and the best result for each unit counts.
Four things this market does that the domestic one does not. Each of them changes what a package has to contain.
A coursework route to the grade
Cambridge 0500 sells a coursework portfolio worth half the qualification: three assignments, one unmarked first draft, the stimulus text submitted with it. English in England lost that in 2015, so nothing in a domestic catalogue teaches it.
Set texts that rotate by examination year
Cambridge Literature names its texts per examination year rather than per syllabus version. We ask which year you are entering before we build, because the same specification code means different books in different years.
Two live series a year
June and November, with a March series in India for some codes. Assessment and revision material is built to two windows, not to one summer.
No statutory framing
Ofsted, the Francis Review and the 2027 national curriculum do not apply to you, so they appear nowhere in the material or in how it is justified.
